With the steady increase in demand, gas is definitely not going to be as cheap as how it used to be some years ago and to top it all, pickup trucks eat a lot of gas when used. If you really want to eliminate your gas costs, you should get an electric car, water fueled car or simply commute and these are by far either expensive or has some hassle involved. So we’re left to your truck which runs on traditional gas and I’m not going to argue about diesel and unleaded choices but here are some tips on how to save gas for your truck:

Drive the right way –unless you’re driving on a non-busy highway or are really bad in driving manual, it’s really recommended to shift to manual as this is more fuel efficient, especially when driving on heavy traffic. It’s also good to practice reading how the traffic flows as this will minimize the chances of you having to step on the brake whenever there’s a line coming up. Lastly, when the main roads are congested, it’s sometimes better to pick alternative routes even if they’re longer as long as they don’t require you to take frequent brakes.

Filling up your gas tank – when done the right way could save you time and money. Record how much your gas lasts and put aside some cash to fill up when necessary and when you do, get a full tank as much as possible. By not having to make frequent stops on gas stations, this will save you time by not having to get up there and travel more often and money by not spending that gas to get your truck into the gas station.

Equip your truck with the right parts – this will also cover maintenance on the parts that often need replacement. Spark plugs deteriorate over time and should be replaced long before they’re used up as these are relatively cheap to replace and bad plugs could consume up to 20% more gas than new ones. Do your regular maintenance by replacing brake fluids and getting engine tune-ups. This should make your car become more gas-friendly.

Lastly, it’s about time you should get your truck a tonneau cover. When driving at high speeds, your truck will experience air drag on the tail gates which increases mileage. Truck tonneau covers, particularly a hard tonneau cover reduce air drag which makes up for better fuel economy. Tonneau covers are pretty easy to come by and they can come with different types and models (i.e. manufacturers make an F150 tonneau cover line specifically for F150 trucks.)
